Empirical studies of professional software design

Location: Meeting Room 1, Ground Floor, JLB
Speaker(s): Prof Marian Petre

Marian will re-present parts of her MODELS 2011 keynote, about expert practice in early design, when design thinking is exploratory and 'modelling' or representation is informal and fluid. She presented observations from a number of different empirical studies of professional design practice, addressing:

 - exploration - consideration of design alternatives

 - the alignment of a model of the domain with a model of the software, and hence of context and engineering concerns

 - representations experts use when they are unconstrained, and how they support human reasoning

 - what we know about what is in designer' minds

 - what can we see in expert behaviour that might inform modelling
