Understanding the richness of diagrams
Room 308 Maths & Computing Building
12.30pm - 13.45pm
Dr. Kamaran Fathulla
There is renewed interest in the literature in what constitutes a diagram. Various frameworks for understanding diagrams, mainly reductionist in their approach, have been suggested but are seen to be unsatisfactory when dealing with fundamental problems of the diversity of diagram types, handling changes whilst maintaining well formedness, and accounting for semantically mixed diagrams. The framework proposed in this talk sees diagrams as the Spatial expression of some Symbolic purpose (SySpM). The framework transcends any application, use, or constraints, and treats the question of what is a diagram as part of the full richness of human functioning in a multi aspectual and irreducible reality.
