The seminar will introduce the Brazilian context for teaching programming and algorithms, looking into the problems faced, and presenting pedagogic strategies to deal with retention in first year introductory modules.
The pedagogic approaches and strategies followed are those used in PUCRS (Pontificia Universidade Católica Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). These deal with the diversification of the role of the teacher and of resources used both in virtual and in face-to face environments.
