Teaching Programming and Algorithms: the Brazilian scenario

The seminar will introduce the Brazilian context for teaching programming and algorithms, looking into the problems faced, and presenting pedagogic strategies to deal with retention in first year introductory modules. The pedagogic approaches and strategies followed are those used in PUCRS (Pontificia Universidade Católica Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). These deal with the diversification of the role of the teacher and of resources used both in virtual and in face-to face environments. BIO: Degree in Mathematics and Science at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande does Sul (1979). Master in Education at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1991) PhD in Computer Science (Intelligent Tutoring Systems) at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1999). Post-Doctoral at College of Education - Texas University at Austin (2011) has experience in Computer Science, acting on the following subjects: Computer Science applied to Education, Distance Education, and Teacher´s Formation regarding Technology, and Computer Science Education.
