Creating and supporting “smarter” citizens through the MK:Smart project

Location: Meeting Room 10, 2nd Floor, JLB
Time: 12:30pm - 13:45pm
Speaker(s): , Daniel Gooch

Smart citizens are not born, but made. This talk will present two streams of work within the MK:Smart project which are helping make the citizens of MK smarter. The first stream is based on the idea that the people who live in a community have the best understanding of local issues. We will discuss the ways in which we have attempted to solicit ideas from citizens around the concept of “smart cities” and encourage them to turn those ideas into a reality. The second stream is focussed on school students. The Urban Data School is exploring how the complex urban data being collected within MK:Smart can be used in classrooms as a teaching resource to improve the data literacy of children, to produce a more data aware and exploratory next generation of city innovators. We will describe how we have encouraged local schoolchildren to get hands-on with Milton Keynes data, developing students’ interpretation, questioning, visualisation and creative skills.
