The Cisco Networking Academy programme as part of its arsenal of teaching tools uses a network simulator (Packet Tracer also known as PT) to enable around one million students to discover and develop essential skills in the configuration of network routers and switches. With the opportunity to learn a range of protocols and security technologies. Since its creation and use on T216 ‘Cisco Networking’ and the Cisco postgrad modules of T824/6/7 and 8 - the Open University has made a small contribution to its development and direction. In parallel KMI at the Open University has been working on developments in the iBook interface and exploring different ways to leverage remote resources via a typical iBook/HTML5 browser environment. This prevention presents a step forward - integrating the simulator with an HTML5 front end and offering prospective networking students to read and engage with practical networking skills via any interactive reading experience. Moving towards a simulated internet on the internet, the HTML interface (known as PT Anywhere), giving remote learners the opportunity to construct networks in situ, solo or as a part of a larger distributed community.
