I kept all my transactions from mPesa intact after a recent trip to Kenya so that other people could see more concretely how it works. I also did some ‘lite’ ethnography checking out various permutations such as just how much money I could draw down a market alley, the phones that are used, and how businesses reconcile their transactions (say on their till systems). Though wonderful to use, mPesa is expensive with the proportionate cost increasing as the value of the transaction decreases. I have recently learned that the remittances to Vodaphone UK are huge challenging some of the hype surrounding mPesa and adding a perspective to academic reports that Kenyans have developed massive optimism about their future in IT.
