Creating the Musical Work: From Archive to ‘Dynamic Edition’
Meeting Room 10, 2nd Floor, JLB
2:15pm - 3.45pm
Prof John Rink - University of Cambridge
This talk will begin by describing the primary sources of the music of Fryderyk Chopin and the considerable complexities surrounding them; it will then review several recent projects focusing on these sources, including the Online Chopin Variorum Edition. This ten-year initiative has led to the development of a unique ‘dynamic edition’ in which digital images of the manuscripts and multiple versions of the first editions of Chopin’s music are made available to users in a number of different formats. Not only will the features and functions of the Chopin Variorum be outlined, but so too will some of the difficulties that have been encountered in preparing and presenting the digital material as well as the metadata accompanying it.
